With the added benefit of a temperature sensor the charger adjusts the charge voltage to suit the batterys temperature and thus

When in "supply" mode, the battery charger provides power even when no battery is attached and is indispensable when changing the battery as you avoid losing difficult-to-restore
program settings.
Using "recond" mode, you can correct the acid stratification that often occurs in deeply discharged batteries. The battery thereby has its power restored and has a longer service life.

*) Back current drain is what drains the battery if the charger is connected without the power cord connected.
**) Ripple denotes the amount of interference there is to the current and voltage. A high current ripple heats the battery and shortens its life. A linear charger has a current ripple of 70 - 400% which is much larger than the maximum 5% for a modern sealed battery. Voltage ripple could harm other equipment, which is connected to the battery.
